Description Image (Are We All Peeping Toms? / Manuel de seconde.)
This photograph represents a family (strange / weird / bizarre / odd) They look like weirdoes. They are watching television. The daughter is standing while the father and the son are on the sofa / couch, drinking pepsi and eating. They are real couch potatoes. They are the Osbournes. The father was the leader of a famous Rock band and the daughter sings too. They are constantly filmed. They are the heroes of a reality TV show and people watch them live.
Expression Orale: Do you like watching that type of show? And why?
I like watching reality TV shows because I think they are funny, entertaining, and sometimes interesting.
I don’t like watching that because I find them boring, uninteresting, stupid, ridiculous, preposterous, absurd...
Well, if you like watching such programs, you can be considered peeping Toms, because you like watching other people live.
So what’s this chapter going to be about?
We are going to talk about Reality TV / this chapter will be about Reality TV.
Devoirs Maison: Lesson, be able to present the photograph and talk about your liking Reality TV or not.
Reprise du cours précédent: the Osbournes / Reality TV / Peeping Toms
Expression Orale
Do you know the first reality TV show?
I think it was... / No, for me it was... In fact, in France, it was entitled ‘Loft Story’. But this show was in fact an adapted version of ‘Big Brother’.
Do you know where this title comes from?
Personne ou quasiment personne ne sachant cela:
Incipit de 1984 de Georges Orwell.
Type de Document + Auteur (other famous stories ?).
Characters
Going into details :
Actions
Feelings
Conclusions:
The hero is under constant surveillance. Wherever he goes, whatever he does, he’s watched / observed or he feels watched, observed either by the posters or by the Telescreen. / He’s under the impression that the poster of BB is staring at him.
He’s forced to watch television and he can’t / mustn’t switch it off / turn it off. He’s deprived of freedom.
Why was it chosen as a title for the original version of ‘Loft Story’?
In this TV show, they picked some people and they made them live in a house under the eyes of millions of viewers. So, it’s a little like the story of Winston Smith.
Devoirs Maison: Lesson + In your opinion, why wasn’t this title chosen for the French Version? Why did the producers choose ‘Loft Story’?
Séance 3
Reprise du cours précédent: 1984 / Big Brother
Synthèse des DMs
- negative connotation for those who know the book…
- most French people don’t know the book so it wouldn’t make any sense for them. People know more the film Love Story. It makes them think of good things. It’s more positive.
Brainstorming
Ex Dismissed : You take one girl or one boy. You make her / him meet two guys or two girls. You let her or him spend time with each of them. Then, you make her or him choose one and dismiss the other. It is broadcast on...
Expression Orale
- Ecrire au tableau :
Never heard of…
Never watched because…
Already watched and…
Love it because…
Prendre des notes au tableau et si aucune structure d’opinion n’est utilisée, laisser des espaces afin de les ajouter et revenir ensuite sur les phrases en disant : ‘This is only your vision, so you have to say it…’ faire ensuite varier les expression en disant : ‘Ah, it has already been said, so find another expression, please…’

Consigne : Express what you said about number 1 (or x) justifying your opinion.
Then your partner will react and you will have to react to what he or she said. Talk to each other.
I agree / Yes, I think so / I quite agree / You’re right /
I disagree / I don’t think so / You’re wrong! / You talk nonsense / You can’t be serious
Don’t you think so? You agree with me, don’t you?

Compréhension Ecrite
OhioDMBFanatic: and guess what? this is the time of year, after the season finals, that I stop watching tv I watch American Idol. GASP!
ElroyJetsonNY: frankly, i think it’s sick. to take satisfaction in the rejection of others to compensate for their own rejection... and Simon is such an evil, unkind man why ppl tolerate him and subject themselves to him is beyond me... such prostitution
OhioDMBFanatic: and if you don't realize that, then you are a f...ing moron
Simon
ElroyJetsonNY: plus it begs the question as to why the producers LET THEM ON IN THE FIRST PLACE these talentless people get on for the sole purpose of being fodder for mockeryit encourages rejection and humiliationit’s not about the successes of the people who advanceit’s about the humiliation and rejection of those who don’t passthat’s the only way to explain
