==> Ecriture du titre du chapitre: Life in th City versus Life in the Country.

Séance 2

Description d'image: Support: Image page 117 du manuel Going Places 2nde

I: Description

This picture is a drawing. In the background we can see a building / there is a skyscraper. In the middle, there is a car and next to the car, we can see a rich woman who is wearing a red coat. In the foreground, there is a strange man, dressed in green, who is pretending he is reading a newspaper. In fact, he is spying on the woman. This man must be a spy or a private-eye.

Cette description sera l'occasion d'un rappel des différentes structures permettant de situer des éléments dans une image qui a une profondeur (comme c'est le cas présentement).

II. Analysis / Impressions

The atmosphere is frightening / scary / spooky because it's dark. Moreover, the gargoyles on the skyscrpaer are scary and the light reminds us of Batman / makes us think of Batman.

So, this image gives a vision of the city / as a place where strange things can happen. / as a dangerous place.

Description d'image: Image page 118 du manuel Going Places 2nde (remarque au passage: "Eh oui! Pour une fois, on va suivre la progression du livre)

Préambule: Cette image ne peut être décrite comme la précédente car elle n'est pas basée sur une profondeur. Donc, cette description sera l'occasion d'un rappel des strcutures permettant de décrire une image en situant les éléments par rapport à un centre.

I. Type de Doc + Description

This document is a modern painting (not an abstract painting, special thanks to Mrs Hein, who is an Art teacher in collège Guynemer). The dominant colour is black. In the middle, we can see a glass in which there is a city. At the bottom, there are piano keys. On the right and on the left, next to the glass, there are two eyes which are looking / staring at each other. The one on the left is a man's eye and the one on the right is a woman's eye. We can also see dice and a mouth at the top. The mouth is a woman's mouth. Indeed, we can see lipstick or gloss on the lips.

II. Understanding this image

This modern painting is symbolical. All the elements we have mentioned represent something.

We can easily understand / We can reasonably derive / that this painting represents city life at night. Indeed, the centre of this image is a city where all the lights are on and the background of the painting is dark. So, what does this painting tell us about nightlife in the city? The glass is a glass of champain; moreover, there are bubbles everywhere in this painting, which represents excitement / seething / effervescence... The piano symbolizes music and parties. The dice symbolize gambling / fun / entertainment. The two eyes show that the city is a place where we can meet people and the mouth with its red and glowing lips represent passion / excitement / love or else lust...

DM: Lesson + read the text below and say it gives the same image of the city.

Séance 3: Reading time

Text p.118

This text is a poem which presents life in the city at night. We can find the same symbols as in the image we have studied.

__________ reminds us of___________. Moreover, ______________ makes us think of_____________... The rhythm shows excitement, seething, effervescence, which is symbolized in the picture by the bubbles.

So both the image and the text present the city as a place where you can get excitement, where you can meet people and have fun. According to the text, it's a place where things happen.

Guidage donné si personne ne le mentionne: One of the verses gives a contrasting vision...

"with no one to meet"

This verse shows that cities are solitary places. The city inhabitants are people who may feel lonely / whose life must be a life of loneliness or sadness...

In the city, although there are many people around you / even if there are many people around you / you might feel lonely. / There are many people in the city, yet / however / nevertheless / you might feel lonely. In spite of / Despite the number of people who live in the city, it can be a solitary place, a place of loneliness.

Séance 5

Synthèse des DMs / Expression Orale

X, Y and Z prefer the country. Indeed, X says... whereas / while / on the contrary A, B, C prefer the city. We can read...

D and E have mixed opinions...

Compréhension Ecrite: Advantages & Disadvantages / Pros and Cons

The city provides more entertainment than the country. In the city people can do more things than in the country. Moreover, you can meet more people, so it's less boring / it's not as boring as the country. (As the saying goes:) the more, the merrier. But, it's more polluted. Indeed, in the countryside, the air is fresher because there is less traffic than in the city/ there are fewer cars. The country life is more peaceful. Yet it's sometimes boring; so more and more teenagers use drugs or drink alcohol in the country.

Pause réflexive:

I. Comparatif de supériorité adj-er than / more adj than (doublement des consonne pour des raisons phonétiques / y > ier / les irréguliers.)

II. Infériorité less adj than / less + N (sing. indénombrable) / fewer + N (pluriel)
